President’s New Year Message for 2018
Welcome to 2018 ABOA Members!
This will be an interesting New Year, with what looks like a new version of the Alberta Building Code coming up this fall, we will have a new edition of the Alberta Building Code! To help be prepared for this, we endeavouring to bring code update training to our Fall Conference this year - but have not locked this in yet as it may not be available for our conference. We have also had a series of changes in our ABOA executive team, and you may have noticed some new names who are reaching out to you. Please extend a special welcome to Linda Girard - Membership Director, Scott Hubley - Second Vice President, and Darrin Harsch - Secretary as they begin their new roles with ABOA in 2018. They bring a new a fresh perspective to our group and have already proven to be hard-workers, and we are all the better for their participation. Sadly, this new start also means the retirement of some cornerstones of the ABOA Executive group. I want to take a moment here to express to Syd Reynar, Brian Boddez and Fred Cornelssen that their efforts on behalf of the ABOA have broadened the foundation that we stand for today. These men not served the ABOA with exceptional commitment and perseverance, but are role models to those of us who follow in their steps…I know I speak for all of us in wishing each of you the very best in all of your future endeavours!
In this upcoming year, we have many good things up and coming, and the ABOA Executive is working hard together to prepare for future opportunities that we can grow for our members.
Please make an effort to get your Membership dues in before Jan 31, 2018. We have had constructive feedback from this year and made some tweaks to the automatic email for next year. If you have any suggestions for how we can improve our website, please let us know, and we will consider our options to upgrade. Also, if you are not already in a Municipality / Employer group registration we highly recommend this approach as it will help process registration en-masse quickly and efficiently. If you have questions about your invoice, please talk with the Treasurer or Membership Director to ensure that all of your concerns are addressed before paying your invoice.
This year Fall ABOA Conference location has also been selected, and we will be going to Leduc, AB at the Executive Royal Hotel for September 19, 20, and 21, 2018. There will also be training scheduled for September 18, 2018 as we had good feedback on the value of pairing a course with the conference last year. This year’s course is from HRAI and will help all of us grow our understanding of the HVAC sections of the Alberta Building Code, which I am particularly interested in myself. I also want to take this opportunity to thank all of the sponsors who made our conference such a great event in 2017. We look forward to having all of you back in 2018. Maybe we can have some more lively debate, it is always good to talk about industry issues, and experience from across the province can speak into these circumstances. This is one way we all collectively grow in our understanding of the code, with an open and honest discussion with industry and ourselves. We extend an invitation to sponsors for this upcoming year and look forward to seeing you in Leduc.
As we work on planning the Fall ABOA Conference, I want to stress the importance to each of our ABOA members on how critical it is that you let us know now what subjects or questions you have that you are interested in. The longer lead time we have, the greater the likelihood that we can arrange for speakers with well-prepared presentations to come and walk through in our sessions. We will strive to adapt some things as we get closer to the conference but your feedback is vitally important at this point, so please email Michael Bos, who is chairing the conference, with any of your suggestions.
Thanks to all of our Bursary applicants this year and we are glad to have awarded three more bursaries to contribute to the future of our ABOA family.
I hope to see some of you at the Annual Safety Codes Council conference in July and hope your year goes well.
